Smoke Free Mecklenburg Poll Results - July 2006

Smoke Free Mecklenburg hired an independent research firm, Clark & Chase Research to survey Mecklenburg County registered voters. The following questions were asked:

  • "Northern Towns" refers to the towns of Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson.
  • "Southern Towns" refers to the towns of Mint Hill, Matthews and Pineville.
  • "Mecklenburg County" encompasses all responses.

 Question #1:  Local Government, such as Mecklenburg County, should have the ability to make its own laws regarding smoking in enclosed public places.

Response

Mecklenburg County:  80.6% Agreed (either strongly or somewhat)
Northern Towns:  82.4% Agreed (either strongly or somewhat)
Southern Towns:  82.9% Agreed (either strongly or somewhat)

Question #2:  Do you support or oppose laws that would make offices, restaurants, bars and all other indoor workplaces smoke-free in your local community?

Response

Mecklenburg County:  75.5% Support (either strongly or somewhat)
Northern Towns:  84.2% Support (either strongly or somewhat)
Southern Towns:  75.8% Support (either strongly or somewhat)

Question #3:  All workers deserve the right to work in a smoke-free environment.

Response:

Mecklenburg County:  88.4% Agreed (either strongly or somewhat)
Northern Towns:  93.0% Agreed (either strongly or somewhat)
Southern Towns:  88.1% Agreed (either strongly or somewhat)

Question #4:  If all other things were to remain the same, how likely would you be to go to your favorite restaurant or bar if it were to become smoke-free?

Response:

Mecklenburg County:  93.7% Were either more likely or equally as likely
Northern Towns:  91.3% Were either more likely or equally as likely
Southern Towns:  96.9% Were either more likely or equally as likely

Question #5:  How likely are you to choose a place for dining and entertainment that provides a smoke-free environment?

Response:

Mecklenburg County:  70% Were either very likely or somewhat as likely
Northern Towns:  70.8% Were either very likely or somewhat as likely
Southern Towns:  81.4% Were either very likely or somewhat as likely
